L’anello bizantino risale al VII secolo ed è caratterizzato da una montatura in oro giallo coeva, realizzata con la tecnica dello sbalzo e impreziosita lateralmente da decori. Al centro, invece, è incastonato un intaglio quadrato in topazio raffigurante, con un’elevatissima qualità tecnica, il busto di Cristo con un nimbo a forma di croce. Questo anello detiene lo stesso potere protettivo che, in epoca greca e romana, era attribuito alle divinità politeiste. In particolar modo, a partire dal IV secolo, i temi cristiani non adornano solamente i sigilli o gli anelli da matrimonio bizantini, bensì si diffondono anche in anelli indossati con scopi puramente religiosi ma, pur sempre, con intenti protettivi e apotropaici. L’anello, dunque, si mostra in perfette condizioni conservative e con una qualità dell’intaglio estremamente rara e ricercata, data la perfetta leggibilità e accuratezza nella resa dei particolari della figura.

The Byzantine ring dates to the 7th century and is characterized by a contemporary yellow gold setting, made with the embossing technique and embellished laterally with decorations. In the centre, however, there is a square topaz intaglio depicting, with a very high technical quality, the bust of Christ with a cross-shaped nimbus. This ring holds the same protective power that, in Greek and Roman times, was attributed to polytheistic deities. In particular, starting from the 4th century, Christian themes did not only adorn Byzantine wedding rings or signet rings, but also spread into rings worn with purely religious purposes but, still, with protective and apotropaic intentions. The ring, therefore, is in perfect conservative conditions and has an extremely rare and refined quality of the intaglio, as can be seen from the perfect readability and accuracy in the rendering of the details of the figure.
