L’anello bizantino, databile all’VIII-IX secolo, si distingue per un intaglio in citrino incastonato in una montatura d’oro coeva impreziosita da una preziosa filigrana. L’incisione raffigurante un agnello sormontato da una croce consente di associare l’oggetto a un anello vescovile, poiché l’Agnus Dei rappresenta simbolicamente Cristo, come attestato dal passo evangelico: “Ecco l’Agnello di Dio” (Gv. 1:29), pronunciato da Giovanni Battista. Questa tipologia di anelli, frequentemente attribuita alla produzione bizantina, viene definita “architettonica” per via dell’intaglio sporgente che richiama la cupola di una chiesa. L’anello costituisce, inoltre, un raro esempio della produzione orafa dell’VIII secolo: testimonia l’elevata maestria nella lavorazione dell’oro e della filigrana, così come la notevole abilità incisoria che ha permesso la realizzazione di iconografie dettagliate e chiaramente leggibili come quella di quest’anello. Si rilevano, infine, le ottime condizioni conservative sia dell’intaglio sia della montatura. Alcuni esempi di anelli bizantini con iconografie cristiane possono essere trovati nella collezione del British Museum: AF. 287; AF. 227; AF. 232.

The Byzantine ring, dating the 8th-9th century, is distinguished by a citrine intaglio set in a contemporary gold setting embellished with a precious filigree. The engraving depicting a lamb surmounted by a cross allows the object to be associated with a bishop's ring, since the Agnus Dei symbolically represents Christ, as attested by the evangelical passage: "Behold the Lamb of God" (Jn. 1:29), pronounced by John the Baptist. This type of ring, frequently attributed to Byzantine production, is defined as "architectural" due to the protruding carving that recalls the dome of a church. The ring also constitutes a rare example of 8th century goldsmith production: it testifies to the high mastery in the processing of gold and filigree, as well as the notable engraving skill that allowed the creation of detailed iconography and clearly legible like that of this ring. Finally, the excellent conservation conditions of both the carving and the frame are noted.
