La spilla, risalente agli anni ’30 del XIX secolo e ascrivibile alla manifattura russa, raffigura uno scarabeo il cui corpo, realizzato in argento, si contraddistingue per un pavé di diamanti taglio rosa, mentre le zampe sono realizzate in oro giallo. L’iconografia dello scarabeo è particolarmente interessante perché nonostante trovò diffusione inizialmente nell’antica cultura egiziana, si diffuse ampiamente fino ad essere adottato prima dagli Antichi Greci e poi arrivare fino a epoche più recenti. Fin dalla sua adozione, infatti, lo scarabeo era considerato un potente amuleto con una funzione magica ed apotropaica, poiché considerato in grado di percepire le forze invisibili e, di conseguenza, tenere lontano il male e la cattiva sorte, sebbene fosse spesso associato altresì al concetto di rinascita e di trasformazione. 

The brooch, dated to the 1830s and attributable to Russian manufacture, depicts a scarab whose body, made of silver, is distinguished by a rose-cut diamond pavé, while the legs are made of yellow gold. The iconography of the scarab is particularly interesting because although it initially found diffusion in ancient Egyptian culture, it spread widely until it was adopted first by the Ancient Greeks and then up to more recent times. Since its adoption, in fact, the scarab was considered a powerful amulet with a magical and apotropaic function, since it was considered capable of perceiving invisible forces and, consequently, keeping evil and bad luck at bay, although it was often also associated with the concept of rebirth and transformation.
