Description
Dating back to the 2nd century, the ring is composed of a gold frame and a contemporary carnelian intaglio engraved with a depiction of an Amazon, an extremely rare iconography. The Amazons, historically, were a mythical people of warrior women whose name means "she who lives without a husband" or "not submissive to man," which is why they became a symbol of courage, strength, and equestrian skill. In this case the Amazon, depicted naked and dressed only in a helmet, appears to be holding a spear and is depicted leaning over what appears to be a shield. In addition to the excellent state of preservation, not only of the carving, but also of the gold setting also from the 2nd century, it is possible to note the very great quality of the intaglio, rich in details such as the tense muscles of the quadriceps or the details of the face which, despite the minute dimensions of the carnelian, have been expressed with great wisdom.
