L’anello, databile al II secolo, è composto da un cammeo realizzato in onice con sfumature che dal grigio tendono al blu, incastonato in una montatura in oro giallo contemporanea. Il cammeo è decorato con il volto di Medusa leggermente rivolto verso sinistra: nella tradizione romana Medusa, conosciuta anche come “Gorgoneion”, aveva la capacità di pietrificare chiunque la guardasse, motivo per cui divenne un potente amuleto con funzione apotropaica, con la capacità di allontanare le energie maligne e proteggere dal pericolo. L’iconografia del volto di Medusa, per questo motivo, iniziò ad essere utilizzata per la decorazione di gioielli e armi, quali scudi affinché, indossandoli questi oggetti potessero garantire protezione. 

The ring, dated to the 2nd century, consists of a cameo made of onyx with shades ranging from grey to blue, which is set in a contemporary yellow gold setting. The cameo is decorated with Medusa's face slightly turned to the left: In Roman tradition, Medusa, also known as “Gorgoneion”, had the ability to petrify anyone who looked at her, which is why she became a powerful amulet with an apotropaic function, with the ability to ward off evil energies and protect against danger. The iconography of Medusa's face, for this reason, began to be used to decorate jewelry and weapons, such as shields so that by wearing these objects they could guarantee protection.
