Description
The ring is composed of a carnelian intaglio dated to around the first half of the 19th century, which is set inside a modern yellow gold setting. The intaglio is decorated with an engraving of a skull resting on a book: the skull is historically a symbol of the Memento Mori, from the Latin "remember that you must die," a moral precept that seeks to remember the brevity of life, thus inviting one not to lose oneself in vanities and riches, which, as such, are transitory, but to invest in a wise life, as evidenced by the presence of the book.
