The intaglio, made of agate, features an 18 kt yellow gold rotating setting and slightly fluted edges. It shows the depiction of Gaius Mucius Scaevola in the iconography that made him famous. During the Sack of Rome in 508 BC by the Etruscans, in fact, the young Roman Mucius Scaevola asked permission from the Senate to kill Porsenna, although he ended up killing a scribe who wore a robe very similar to that of the Etruscan king. Mucius was led to Porsenna and, as can be seen in the carving, he placed his right hand on the Fire of Sacrifices, burning it and accompanying the gesture with the following words: "The splendid dress of your scribe has misled my right hand, which I will now punish in the fire".
