Description

The ring consists of an 18-karat yellow gold setting in which is set an agate cameo dated to Roman production in the 2nd century. The cameo is characterised by the relief engraving of a female profile attributable to Faustina the Younger, daughter of the emperor Antoninus Pius and Faustina the Elder, who was Roman empress as wife of Marcus Aurelius. Several portraits have survived, including coins and cameos, in which the young empress is depicted with a gathered hairstyle and wavy hair framing her face, as well as extremely delicate and noble facial features. The cameo is preserved in excellent condition, and its engraving quality can be seen with which the hair strands and details such as the ear or eyes were rendered.
