Description
The ring is composed of an 18-karat yellow gold mount in which is set an ancient Greek silver coin, dated between 350 and 220 BC. This type of coin is called an obol, a small silver coin used both for daily exchanges and for votive offerings. The coin in question refers to Massalia, an ancient Greek colony located in present-day Marseille, where these coins were minted, recognizable by the presence of the initials MA on the reverse. The recto, on the other hand, is characterised by a face, in this case associated with Apollo, god of the Sun and the arts, although it is not uncommon to find the affixing of the face of Artemis, goddess of the hunt, or figures of Nymphs.
