Description

The cross-shaped pendant, attributable to the jewellery of the late eighteenth century, is characterized by a very refined silver setting, a favourite metal in this era as it is capable of reflecting a greater amount of light once polished than gold. Another typical aspect of eighteenth-century jewellery recognizable in the cross pendant is the thinness of the setting, reduced to a minimum, so as to be able to make the emeralds the real protagonists. The pendant, however, is also enriched by perimeter appliques of diamonds, which form an extremely elegant symmetrical play of scrolls and perfectly in line with the taste of the time. To complete the beauty and richness of the cross there is the back part of the setting, finely decorated with floral motifs and engraved scrolls, perfectly in accordance with the front appliques. The jewel is in excellent conservation condition and is a precious example of eighteenth-century jewellery, testifying how in this period jewels combined devotion and faith with fashion and taste.
