Questo raffinato pendente rinascimentale è databile alla fine del XVI secolo e si distingue per la sua forma a croce, la quale è enfatizzata al centro dalla presenza di smeraldi taglio calibré. Il contorno del pendente, invece, è composto da una sottilissima filigrana, mentre le estremità e i punti di raccordo della croce sono ornati da foglie d’acanto, necessarie per dare uniformità alla composizione e colorate con smalti bianchi e verdi che riprendono le tonalità degli smeraldi centrali. Questi smalti sono applicati con la tecnica en ronde bosse, particolarmente diffusa nell’arte orafa rinascimentale, caratterizzata da decorazioni a rilievo e a tutto tondo, che necessitavano di un’applicazione specifica degli smalti, affinché essi non subissero variazioni, e di cui la Saliera di Benvenuto Cellini è un perfetto esempio. Le decorazioni geometriche e floreali, però, proseguono anche sui lati e sul retro del pendente, dove le braccia della croce sono ulteriormente impreziosite da applicazioni in oro a rilievo. Il pendente si presenta in ottime condizioni conservative ed è un perfetto esempio della maestria dell’arte orafa rinascimentale, in cui si prediligevano composizioni geometriche, pietre preziose e l’impiego raffinato degli smalti.

This refined Renaissance pendant dates to the late 16th century and is distinguished by its cross shape, which is emphasized in the centre by the presence of calibré-cut emeralds. The outline of the pendant, on the other hand, is composed of a very thin filigree, while the ends and connection points of the cross are decorated with acanthus leaves, necessary to give uniformity to the composition and coloured with white and green enamels that take up the nuances of the central emeralds. These enamels are applied with the en ronde bossetechnique, particularly widespread in Renaissance goldsmith art, characterised by relief and all-round decorations, which required a specific application of the enamels, so that they did not undergo variations, and of which Benvenuto Cellini's Salt Shaker is a perfect example. The geometric and floral decorations, however, also continue on the sides and back of the pendant, where the arms of the cross are further embellished with embossed gold applications. The pendant is in excellent conservative condition and is a perfect example of the mastery of Renaissance goldsmith art, in which geometric compositions, precious stones and the refined use of enamels were preferred.
