Period: Late 18th Century
Ring size: 6
Weight:4.38 gr.
The ring, rectangular in shape, dates to the late 18th century and features a rare painted miniature with a female eye in the centre, in perfect conservation condition, protected by glass and enclosed within a contour of natural pearls. This is a very curious type of jewellery called "lover's eye," particularly popular during the Georgian era. These miniatures were widespread on rings, brooches and pendants and only the wearer knew the identity of the lover depicted, establishing a deep but at the same time discreet and mysterious bond. The part of the body where the jewel was worn also contributed to creating a sentimental and emotional connection, as in the case of the Prince of Wales who is said to have worn a pendant locked by a padlock near his heart, inside which was depicted the eye of his wife Mary Fitzherbert.
