Description

The ring features a Roman intaglio in black agate, dating back to the 3rd century, which was later set inside a yellow gold setting. The intaglio depicts the Celtic-Roman deity Cocidius, venerated especially in northern Britain and associated by the Romans with the god Mars. Cocidius, in fact, was honoured as the god of war and hunting, although he was also associated with Silvanus, god of forests. The intaglio, in this case, shows Cocidius portrayed in profile girding objects in his hands that are difficult to interpret, although they may recall his role as a deity. The ring, moreover, is completed by a splendid gold setting crafted with a meticulous filigree that gives further finesse.
