L’anello, databile al XIX secolo, si distingue per essere composto da una testa di scimmia scolpita in labradorite con occhi di diamanti marroni e una montatura in oro giallo 18 carati. L’iconografia della scimmia risulta essere tanto rara quanto interessante, giacché spesso è associata alla saggezza, soprattutto nel confucianesimo, dove si invita a perseguire la correttezza e il bene. In altre culture, invece, è attribuita alla felicità e alla fortuna, mentre in occidente è spesso utilizzata come simbolo dell’arte perché così come l’artista imita la natura, la scimmia imita i comportamenti umani, di cui erano considerati uno specchio, intelligente e spesso dispettoso. Inoltre, è necessario ricordare che durante l’epoca georgiana, gli anelli di gemme intagliate raffiguranti animali erano alquanto insoliti, sebbene spesso scolpiti nella labradorite. Questa raffigurazione di una scimmia riflette sicuramente il fascino per l’esotico, alimentato al tempo dal commercio e dai viaggi che si iniziavano ad intraprendere in terre lontane, uniti all’interesse per la storia naturale promosso dall’illuminismo. 

The ring, dated to the 19th century, is distinguished by being composed of a monkey head carved from labradorite with brown diamond eyes and an 18-karat yellow gold setting. Monkey iconography is as rare as it is interesting, as it is often associated with wisdom, especially in Confucianism, where it is called upon to pursue correctness and good. In other cultures, however, it is attributed to happiness and luck, while in the West it is often used as a symbol of art because just as the artist imitates nature, the monkey imitates human behaviour, of which they were considered an intelligent and often mischievous mirror. Furthermore, it should be remembered that during the Georgian era, carved gem rings depicting animals were quite unusual, although often carved from labradorite. This depiction of a monkey certainly reflects the fascination for the exotic, fuelled at the time by the trade and travels that were beginning to be undertaken in distant lands, combined with the interest in natural history promoted by the Illuminism.
