Questo intaglio magico romano, di stampo gnostico, risale al II-III secolo ed è realizzato in ematite: l’incisone è stata apposta in entrambi i lati della pietra, motivo per cui è stata inserita in una montatura contemporanea in oro 18 carati girevole, così da favorire facilmente la visione di entrambe le facce. Da una parte è raffigurato un uomo con testa leonina che, in ambito gnostico, potrebbe riferirsi a Leontocefalo, servo della divinità solare Mitra, infatti aveva il compito di sovrintendere al movimento delle stelle e di cui lo scettro che tiene in mano è un attributo, simbolo del potere che il tempo ha su tutto il mondo, a cui si aggiunge la sottostante figura del coccodrillo, presumibilmente simbolo di protezione. Sul lato opposto, invece, c’è una figura umana affiancata da diversi attributi come uno scettro e un elmo. In definitiva si tratta di una pietra che non aveva solamente il valore di oggetto decorativo o estetico, bensì era indossato per i poteri magici che le venivano attribuiti.

This magical Roman intaglio, of Gnostic style, dates back to the 2nd-3rd century and is made of hematite: the engraving was realized on both sides of the stone, which is why it was inserted into a contemporary rotating 18k gold setting, so as to easily facilitate the vision of both faces. On the one hand, a man with a lion's head is depicted who, in the Gnostic context, could refer to Leontocephalus, servant of the solar divinity Mithras, in fact he had the task of supervising the movement of the stars and of which the sceptre he holds in his hand is an attribute, symbol of the power that time has over the whole world, to which is added the underlying figure of the crocodile, presumably a symbol of protection. On the opposite side, however, there is a human figure flanked by various attributes such as a sceptre and a helmet. Ultimately it is a stone that not only had the value of a decorative or aesthetic object, but, was worn for the magical powers attributed to it.
