L’intaglio del II secolo e di produzione romana, raffigura il profilo di una figura maschile che indossa una corona radiata, chiamata così perché connotata dalla presenza di un numero variabile di punte acuminate, solitamente 12, simbolo dei mesi dell’anno. I romani attribuivano questa corona agli dèi e agli eroi deificati, di conseguenza, è possibile supporre che l’intaglio raffiguri Helios, dio sole greco. La corona all’antica, però, venne utilizzata anche da alcuni imperatori romani come Caligola, Traiano o Marco Aurelio, quale simbolo di divinità. In definitiva, si può presumere che l’intaglio raffiguri un imperatore, verosimilmente Traiano o Marco Aurelio, sebbene, in mancanza di ulteriori attributi sia impossibile un’identificazione certa. L’intaglio presenta un’elevatissima qualità che permette una lettura chiara del soggetto ed è impreziosito da una montatura antica con pergamene laterali.

The intaglio of the second century of Roman production, depicts the profile of a male figure wearing a radiated crown, so called because characterized by the presence of a variable number of pointed tips, usually 12, symbol of the months of the year. The Romans attributed this crown to deities and deified heroes, therefore it is possible to assume that the carving depicts Helios, the Greek sun god. The old-fashioned crown, however, was also used by some Roman emperors such as Caligula, Trajan or Marcus Aurelius, as a symbol of divinity. Ultimately, it can be assumed that the carving depicts an emperor, probably Trajan or Marcus Aurelius, although in the absence of further attributes a certain identification is impossible. The carving has a very high quality that allows a clear reading of the subject and is embellished with an ancient frame with side scrolls.
