The cameo depicts four conjoined heads that take the name of gryllus, which means the union of two or more heads of human and animal origin, often with mythological associations and with a protective function. In this case, the cameo, datable around the eighteenth century, represents a ram – a symbol of strength and heroism, a satyr – symbol of lascivious and Apollonian pleasures and, finally, a young man and an old man, symbolic representation of time passing.

Il cammeo raffigura quattro teste congiunte che prendono il nome di gryllus, con cui si intende l’unione di due o più teste di origine umana e animale, spesso con associazioni mitologiche e con una funzione protettiva. In questo caso il cammeo, databile intorno al XVIII secolo, rappresenta un ariete – simbolo di forza ed eroismo, un satiro – simbolo dei piaceri lascivi ed apollinei e, infine, un giovane e un anziano, simbolo del tempo che passa.
