The brooch is mounted in 18 kt gold and has a cameo with the depiction of San Giorgio fighting the dragon, theme derived from a medieval legend also narrated within the Legenda Aurea by Jacopo da Varagine, according to which a dragon blackmailed the inhabitants of a village by extorting them tributes. Once they ran out of resources to give the dragon, the inhabitants began to sacrifice one of them once a year, until a princess was chosen. Saint George, to prevent her from being sacrificed, decided to fight the dragon and put an end to the misdeeds of the village. In this cameo the figure of the princess is omitted, although you can see Saint George who - with great vehemence - kills the dragon with his spear. The cameo has a high quality that allows a full and clear reading of the legend that spread in the West during the twelfth century, becoming very popular in pictorial, sculptural and widespread, also in the decorative arts.

La spilla è montata in oro 18 kt e presenta un cammeo con la raffigurazione di San Giorgio che combatte il drago, tema desunto da una leggenda medievale narrata anche all’interno della legenda Aurea di Jacopo da Varagine, secondo cui un drago ricattava gli abitanti di un villaggio estorcendoli tributi. Una volta finite le risorse da concedere al drago, gli abitanti iniziarono a sacrificare uno di loro una volta all’anno, fino a quando venne scelta una principessa. San Giorgio, per evitare che ella venisse sacrificata, decise di combattere il drago e porre fine alle sevizie del villaggio. In questo cammeo la figura della principessa è omessa, sebbene si possa vedere San Giorgio che – con grande veemenza – uccide il drago con la sua lancia. Il cammeo presenta un’elevata qualità che permette una piena e chiara lettura della leggenda che si diffuse in Occidente nel corso del XII secolo, divenendo molto popolare in ambito pittorico, scultoreo e diffuso, altresì, nelle arti decorative.
