Description

The ring is composed of a Roman denarius minted between January and September 97, during the brief empire of Nerva which lasted from 96 to 98 when, having come to power after the assassination of Domitian, it put an end to an autocratic period characterised by tensions. Nerva subsequently appointed Trajan as his successor, helping to strengthen a stable and peaceful government and initiating the succession of power not based on dynastic motives or force of arms, but rather identifying the successor as the best man of the moment. The obverse of the coin is characterised by the profile of the emperor Nerva surrounded by the inscription “IMP NERVA CAES AVG PM TR POT”, while the reverse bears the inscription “COS III PATER PATRIAE”, flanked by the simpulum, aspergillum, a vase and the lituus, all priestly instruments that want to honor the proclamation of Nerva as Pater Patriae, occurred in 97 by the Roman Senate to celebrate the fact that the emperor had been elected without the support of the army. The coin is inserted inside a modern 18-karat yellow gold frame open on the reverse, so as to allow the coin to be seen in its entirety.
