The skull, dates to the mid-19th century, is made of agate and features a careful engraving that makes its iconography effective. The skull, moreover, is designed to be worn as a pendant, as can be seen from the hook placed on the top of the skull, necessary to allow its use as an amulet. This pendant, in fact, can be interpreted as a Memento Mori, that is a symbolic object that invites awareness of human transience and fragility, thus inviting us to live wisely and virtuously in the consciousness of the transience of existence.
