This Ancient Roman silver coin of Emperor Vespasian has been mounted in a stunning modern 18 Karat gold ring. T. Flavius Vespasianus was born at Falacrina in 9 AD, the son of Flavius Sabinus and Vespasia Polla. Despite his humble origins, his military skills carried him to a series of important posts, and he commanded part of the forces which invaded Britain under Claudius. On July 1, 69 AD the legions at Alexandria proclaimed Vespasian Emperor. The Danubian legions scan followed suit and invaded Italy, defeating the forces of the Emperor Vitellius at the battle of Cremona. Vespasian reached Rome in 70 AD and quickly set about repairing the damages to the State caused by the civil war. Vespasian died on June 24th, 79 AD. Though his origins were humble, Vespasian rose to the throne of Rome through a combination of talent, ambition and luck. A superb strategist and capable statesman. Those qualities that made him a great ruler seem evident even in this small imperial portrait.
