Description

The ring features a gold setting in which is set a convex rock crystal intaglio dated to the Roman production in the 2^nd-3^rd century, when Roman jewellery emancipated itself from the Hellenic style, further developing goldsmith techniques and a greater use of stones. The intaglio is characterized by a depiction of Jupiter according to classical iconography: the deity is depicted seated on a throne, holding a lightning bolt that he hurled to demonstrate his power; at his feet, however, is an eagle that, in addition to being his sacred animal, represents his sovereignty and power. The choice of rock crystal is distinctive: the Romans attributed this stone to Jupiter because it was believed to possess protective properties, and the iconographic choice for this signet ring is interesting, which was used by Roman magistrates and patricians to seal official documents, making use of the image of Jupiter as a symbol of legal authority, justice, and legitimacy.
