L’anello, databile intorno al 1790 circa e realizzato in oro 18 carati, è in realtà composto da tre anelli, due dei quali presentano la decorazione di due mani intrecciate che, una volta aperte, rivelano un cuore apposto sul terzo anello. Le “maninfide” sono una particolare tipologia di anelli che si diffuse a partire dall’epoca romana quale espressione di amore e affetto che coronano il matrimonio, di cui questo anello simboleggia la celebrazione. Questa iconologia deriva dal rituale romano che prevedeva l’unione della mano destra durante la cerimonia di fidanzamento, la quale prende il nome di dextrarum iunctio, questo perché essa era considerata sacra per la Fides, dea della fiducia. La pratica della mano destra che viene stretta in simbolo di amore e unione matrimoniale è rimasta viva nel corso dei secoli, tanto in gioielleria quanto in pittura, come testimoniato da Rubens nel ritratto nuziale che celebra l’unione con la moglie Isabella Brant del 1609.

The ring, dated around 1790 and made of 18-carat gold, is composed of three rings, two of which have the decoration of two interlaced hands that, once opened, reveal a heart affixed to the third ring. The “maninfide” ("hands in faith") are a particular type of rings that spread from the seventeenth century as an expression of love and affection that crown the wedding, of which this ring symbolizes the celebration. This iconology comes from the Roman ritual that involved the union of the right hand during the engagement ceremony, which takes the name of dextrarum iunctio, because it was considered sacred for Fides, goddess of trust. The practice of the right hand that is held as a symbol of love and marriage has remained alive over the centuries, both in jewellery and painting, as witnessed by Rubens in the wedding portrait celebrating the union with his wife Isabella Brant in 1609.
