The French artist René Foy was born in Paris and worked as a jeweler and sculptor throughout his life. He was a prominent figure in French jewelry at the turn of the century, exhibiting work in the Art Nouveau and Art Déco styles in enameled gold and carved ivory. He also created pieces for the stage, creating jewelry and other items for the extraordinary actress Sarah Bernhardt, who played the title character in Victorien Sardou's play Théodora during its 1902 production at Paris' Théâtre Sarah Bernhardt. He was depicted as an energetic character who promoted jewels as art.
