Il cammeo, risalente al XIX secolo, è realizzato su un’agata bicolore incastonata in una montatura in oro giallo 18 carati e presenta un contorno di diamanti taglio rosa e perle naturali che impreziosiscono il gioiello il quale, come spesso accade in antichità, è pensato per essere indossato sia come spilla che come pendente, grazie a una piccola asola in oro apposta nella parte posteriore. Sulla base scura dell’agata, con sfumature tendenti al grigio, emerge a contrasto il profilo di una giovane donna riccamente abbigliata: si nota la ricercatezza della stoffa dell’abito, le perle che adornano il décolleté e una capigliatura che riflette il gusto ottocentesco, impreziosita da appliques tra cui ulteriori perle. Si nota, dunque, che il ritratto è ricco di dettagli resi con estrema minuzia ed attenzione ed è proprio da questi elementi, tra cui altresì la resa virtuosa e perfettamente proporzionata del volto femminile, che si comprende l’elevata qualità del cameo, le cui incisioni sono restituite con grande finezza di tratto che ha permesso all’artista di restituire un’immagine estremamente naturalistica.

The cameo, dated to the 19th century, is made on a two-tone agate set in an 18-karat yellow gold setting and features a surround of rose-cut diamonds and natural pearls that embellish the jewel which, as often happens in antiquity, is designed to be worn both as a brooch and as a pendant, thanks to a small gold buttonhole at the back. On the dark base of the agate, with shades tending towards grey, the profile of a richly dressed young woman emerges in contrast: one notices the refinement of the fabric of the dress, the pearls that adorn the décolleté and a hairstyle that reflects the nineteenth-century taste, embellished with details including further pearls. It is therefore noteworthy that the portrait is rich in details rendered with extreme minutiae and attention, and it is precisely from these elements, including the naturalistic and perfectly proportioned rendering of the female face, that we can understand the high quality of the cameo, whose engravings are made with great finesse that allowed the artist to convey an extremely naturalistic image.
