Questo anello è interamente realizzato in argento ed ha apposta nella parte superiore un’emidracma, ovvero un’antica moneta greca del valore di metà dracma, con la raffigurazione di una Gorgone, divinità figlia di Forco e Ceto, con un aspetto mostruoso: di solito era rappresentata con occhi e bocca spalancate, la lingua di fuori e capelli assimilabili a serpenti, inoltre, aveva la capacità di pietrificare chiunque le guardasse, così come Medusa che era una delle tre sorelle Gorgoni. Quello della Gorgoneion è un soggetto iconografico ampiamente utilizzato nella monetazione greca già a partire dal IV-V secolo a.C., quando venne apposta in quanto elemento apotropaico, ovvero un’immagine di buon auspicio in grado di tenere lontani gli spiriti malvagi e la cattiva sorte. Questo valore protettivo al tempo era necessario per proteggere la città che emetteva queste monete e il singolo che la deteneva, così come nel momento in cui venne montata ad anello, permettendo una protezione ancora maggiore data dalla possibilità di poter indossare questo antico talismano. 

This ring is entirely made of silver and has a hemidrachm affixed to the upper part, which is an ancient Greek coin worth half a drachma, with the depiction of a Gorgon, a divinity daughter of Phorcys and Ceto, with a monstrous appearance: usually she was represented with their eyes and mouth wide open, her tongue hanging out and hair similar to snakes, furthermore, she had the ability to petrify anyone who looked at them, such as Medusa which was one of the three Gorgon’s sisters. That of the Gorgoneion is an iconographic subject widely used in Greek coinage starting from the 4th-5th century BC, when it was placed as an apotropaic element, that is, an auspicious image capable of keeping evil spirits and bad luck away. This protective value was necessary at the time to protect the city that issued these coins and the individual who held it, as well as when it was mounted in a ring, allowing even greater protection given by the possibility of wearing this ancient talisman.
