Roman intaglio set in a gold ring, with hollow setting and a very fine carnelian carving. The carving, in particular, depicts the Roman deity Fortuna, goddess of chance and fate, who can be flanked by different types of attributes including, as in this case, the cornucopia, a symbol of abundance and prosperity, and a gubernaculum, or a rudder that alludes to the power of the goddess to guide the life and destiny of men. The personification of Fortune, moreover, is embellished with a peplos and a crown on the head, moreover, they accompany the figure of the inscriptions in ancient Greek that Roman engravers used to emulate.
